My Teaching Philosophy

Students in my classroom know that they have a voice. Sometimes it is only through art that a child’s voice can be molded to tell their story. My students feel comfortable knowing that their story is unique and powerful and important. I ensure that students understand how to use art tools and different mediums because knowing how to use art tools facilitates their expression. Starting with basic building blocks give students a solid understanding of what they need to use to master whatever project they want to pursue.

I strive to teach students the technical aspects of creating art, assist them in understanding that art can offer them a unique voice, and connect students with artists so they can expand their knowledge of not only the art world but the world at-large. Art offers children a chance to stretch their nimble minds and gives them the courage to be connected with something greater than themselves, all the while giving them the safety and security of knowing their opinions and ideas are valued.
